Her Eminence Jetsun Kusho-La was born in 1938 in Tibet in the year of the Earth Tiger, into the holy Khon family, from which many great masters have come since the 8th century. These include the Five Great Founders of the Sakya order. The Khon family is known by several special names, including Lharig, or Celestial Family. She is the elder sister of His Holiness the 41st Sakya Trizin, the present throne holder of the Sakyapa school, and the mother of Luding Khen Rinpoche, the current and 76th throne holder of the Norpa sub sect of the Sakyapas. In her lifetime Her Eminence has received teachings from the most highly realised Tibetan Buddhist masters of the 20th century, and has undergone the same training as His Holiness the Sakya Trizin.
She is therefore regarded as one of the guardians of traditional Tibetan Buddhist teachings. She is revered as only the third woman in the history of the Sakyapas to have transmitted the Lam Dre, the Path including the Result, the highest Tantra teaching. Regarded as the most highly realised female teacher in Tibetan Buddhism today, Her Eminence travels extensively all over the world to give teachings and initiations, and has established many Dharma centres. In the midst of this busy schedule she has accepted the invitation of Khenpo Ngawang Dhamchoe of Sakya Tharpa Ling in Sydney to bestow precious teaching in Australia.
When Her Eminence Jetsun Kushok
Rinpoche arrived at Sydney airport on
Wednesday 29 August 2007 with her
husband Se Kushok-la, she was warmly
welcomed by our Resident Teacher His
Eminence Dungyud Tulku Rinpoche, His
Eminence Aenpo Kyabgon Rinpoche and
Khenpo Ngawang Dhamchoe.
This visit from the highest female Tibetan
Master alive today was a source of
immense joy to the many Sakya students
who had been patiently awaiting her
arrival following on from the deferment
of her 2005 visit, when Her Eminence
had not been well enough to travel the
long distance to Australia.
The primary reason for Her Eminence
visiting Australia was to bestow the precious Vajrayogini Blessing and give
an extended Vajrayogini teaching at
Sakya Tharpa Ling however due to Her
Eminence’s profound generosity she
agreed to spend a total of 64 days giving
teachings and empowerments in 16
different locations around Australia.
After a formal welcome ceremony at Sakya
Tharpa Ling, Her Eminence gave Medicine
Buddha and Chenrezig empowerments
before travelling to the Drogmi Retreat
Centre where she gave the Rig Sum
Gompo empowerment and conducted
a land blessing at the proposed site for
the new Gompa. She then bestowed the
Uncommon White Tara empowerment
and led a four day teaching retreat.
From Sydney Her Eminence travelled
to Adelaide, Whyalla, and Melbourne
although the hectic schedule of her
program contributed to her contracting a
virus which unfortunately prevented her
from visiting Sakya Trinley Ling in the
Blue Mountains.
For a while it wasn’t clear whether Her
Eminence would be well enough to
bestow the Vajrayogini Blessing at Sakya
Tharpa Ling and while she was clearly
still suffering from the virus she chose
to proceed with the program to the deep
heart felt appreciation of the more than
60 students who received the Vajrayogini
Blessing and most of whom stayed on
for the retreat with Khenpo Ngawang
Dhamchoe translating for Her Eminence.
We were very blessed to have His Eminence Dungyud Rinpoche give a
very clear and concise reteaching
each afternoon
while Loppon Tsering led the
final session instructing on
the sadhana and leading us
in strong practice together.
Meanwhile Lama Ngawang
discharged his ritual duties
with skill, devotion and a
humour that all up was
inspiring. Consistent with Her
Eminence’s tireless
generosity, she ended up
spending the Friday and
then both the Saturday
and Sunday giving the
additional Body Mandala and
Meditation Beyond Thought
empowerments to a large
number of practitioners.
Long Life Prayer for Her Eminence Jetsun Kushok Rinpoche
Through the blessings of an ocean of divinities of longevity and immortality,
Coming from the celestial race of luminosity you grant the glory of great bliss.
Wealthy with the vast activity of tantric vidyadharas,
chief among dakinis, we supplicate you to live long!
Protectress of the Dharma and of beings –
You arose from the lineage and the teachings,
Of revered Sakya, which is the radiant sun of the Enlightened One's religion.
Turn fully the wheel for attaining deathlessness and ever increase your twofold work!
Traversing the path of deathless freedom,
Ripen your mind; acquire the fortune of liberation.
May you gaze directly upon the face of reality
And dwell always in joy that does not fail!
